WATCH TODAY’S SERVICE
It is interesting what we remember most about former presidents. President George H. W. Bush only served one term (1988-1992) and was my commander in chief for a season while I was in the Navy. Even so, when I think of his days, I don’t immediately go to the big things.
Instead, I remember what he did just before he left office. He had just been defeated by Bill Clinton, and almost exactly one week after offering his concession speech, he took a journey to the recently completed Vietnam Veterans Memorial. At midnight, with no advance notice, no fanfare, and no press, he stepped out of his presidential limousine, put on his leather Navy flight jacket and took a turn reading the names of those who had died as a part of that year’s around-the-clock Veterans Day reading. I thought it was one of the best things he did. In a quiet behind the scenes way, he spoke words and names with honor.
In this week’s worship service, we are going to speak to the ninth commandment: “You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.” As we will see, obeying this commandment is not simply a matter of not speaking lies and falsehood, but it is also in saying positive things, even in the quieter settings. When we, like former President Bush, speak well about those who are not there to speak for themselves, good things happen and people take note. Come join us and let’s talk some more today in worship! – In Christ, Pastor Pete
