TAX WISE GIVING

APPRECIATED ASSETS

A gift of appreciated assets – stocks, bonds, or mutual funds that have gained in value – is a win-win situation. When you give stock directly to the church, you receive a tax deduction for the current market value and avoid paying capital gains tax. These securities may be donated directly or used in planned gifts (like charitable trusts or charitable gift annuities). In terms of tax benefits, it is often better to give appreciated assets rather than cash.

You can transfer stocks and bonds to Reveille through your broker. They will need the following information to complete the transaction:

  • DTC # 0443
  • Pershing
  • Account name: Reveille United Methodist Church
  • Account # DA4003905
QUALIFIED CHARITABLE DISTRIBUTION FROM AN IRA

If you are age 70½ or over, you may transfer tax-free gifts totaling up to $100,000 per year directly to a qualified charity from a traditional or Roth IRA. These transfers, known as qualified charitable distributions or QCDs, become tax-free as long as they’re paid directly from the IRA to an eligible charitable organization such as Reveille. For those who are at least 72 (73 if you reach age 72 after December 31, 2022), QCDs count toward the IRA owner’s required minimum distribution (RMD) for the year. DONOR ADVISED FUNDS

A donor advised fund can ensure you have sufficient deductions to be able to itemize in a tax year. By establishing and making a contribution to a donor advised fund this year, you can take the maximum tax deduction the IRS allows for this year, even though the distributions from your fund to Reveille and other charities may not be made until next year or later.

LEGACY GIVING

You may wish to consider making a gift to Reveille as part of your financial and estate planning. With charitable gift planning, you can leave a legacy that will continue to transform the world for years to come.

There are many options for this type of giving including bequests made through a will, giving the proceeds of a life insurance policy, and gifts of retirement plan remainders.

To learn more about these and other ways to make charitable gifts, contact Director of Administration Terri Edwards or (804) 359-6041, ext. 116.
