TODAY’S SERMON

Have you ever heard of the plant called “fireweed”? It is that hearty stock that is typically the first to shoot up after a forest fire. In the aftermath of ashes and embers, the brightly colored flower breaks through to begin the process of restoring the soil and establishing new growth.

This weekend in worship, we are going to look at a passage from Isaiah that speaks to the way that this child in Bethlehem will grow up to “bestow on (us) a crown of beauty instead of ashes.” In a poignant way, we are reminded of the wonder of what Christ does for us and how in those places that seem gray and lifeless, he can yet lift us up to be and provide beauty in what can be such a stark world.

I don’t know about you, but in this season where so much is hard, I can use a reminder about this beauty. At times, those ashes just seem a little too near. Let’s take a peek into what God has done in that manger because right now all of us need that picture of fireweed. Even more, let’s see if we can be that break through beauty in the lives of others. – In Christ, Lead Pastor Rev. Dr. Pete Moon
