TODAY’S SERMON

Several years ago, I had the privilege of joining a couple of mission teams that traveled to Sierra Leone in West Africa. We were a part of an ongoing project to build an orphanage for the many children that had lost their parents in the gruesome years of civil war that had ravaged the country throughout the 1990s.

During those visits, I was simply amazed at what the church was doing. Here, in literally the poorest country in the world The United Methodist Church was making a profound difference. The bishop, Joseph Humper, was leading a national effort through a Truth and Reconciliation Commission, modeled on that which had occurred in South Africa. They painstakingly documented the atrocities, pain, and injustice experienced by so many. By naming it, the victims found some semblance of dignity. With the truth being so clearly documented, there was opportunity for the nation to work its way forward with healing.

The efforts didn’t stop there. All the while we worked to establish orphanages, a hospital, and schools. We taught the Bible to the children and they grew up with a formation in the gospel. Since then many of the children have grown up to be leaders in the community and government as the healing continues.

Today in worship, we are going to be reminded that the church is in the business of being salt and light, of being the means of grace that changes the communities around us so that we and they look more like the kingdom of God. That sounds like a very tall order, but if it can be done so well in places like Sierra Leone, we are reminded that there is hope for us. Such is the power of grace. Come join us in worship and let’s continue our deep dive into the power that is yet at work within us. – In Christ, Pastor Pete
