WATCH TODAY’S SERVICE

I have told some of you about my hobby of “car flipping.” I like to find a car that someone wants to just get out of their driveway, see if I can fix it up, and then sell a good but inexpensive car to someone else. It is fun to see something so broken running well again.

A couple of months ago, I met a father in the parking lot of a car repair shop. He was selling a very nice car at a very reduced price for his stepson. It seemed that the car had started “groaning.” Unfortunately, the young man ignored it. The groan got louder but he kept driving. The groan soon turned into a very loud noise as the entire driveshaft came loose and tore asunder several critical parts underneath the car. The mechanic quoted an exorbitant fee to repair it, and as a result, this father just wanted it gone.

Few of us, especially parents of teens, can throw stones here. We have all had those times where we or our children have ignored those groans. What is interesting this week, is the way that Paul uses this graphic word. He says that the creation “groans” as it longs for that day for which it was originally created. The creation around us yearns to be free from the mess that we as humans have made of our planet. Like this young man, we can be very skilled at tuning it out.

In this divided time, we can typically make the decision to engage or disengage with care of our creation through the lens of our politics instead of our Bibles. This week, as we continue our “New” series, we will be reminded that when God does a new thing in our lives, his plan is that that blessing will pour out from us to the people, the world, and the creation around us. Because God works in us, the volume of the creational “groan” around us is supposed to subside just a bit.

Come join us in worship. In this season of pandemic, we might be tempted to turn inward, and claim all that blessing for ourselves. Our time together will remind us that God desires to yet do this new thing in you and me and multiply that blessing into the creation around us. Join us for worship now! – In Christ, Rev. Dr. Pete Moon
