TODAY’S SERMON

Every year, on the week before Christmas or close to it, we run into that same line. The angel Gabriel is speaking to Mary and explains the wonder of what is happening to her and to the world. Mary is still trying to take it all in when the angel sums it all up with his final words: “For nothing will be impossible with God.”

The veteran pastor Rick Warren takes this verse very seriously. He decided to open up his dictionary and literally cut out the word impossible. He would say that if the word is not in God’s vocabulary it wasn’t going to be in his. What would it look like to live a life without that word? It would be many things, but perhaps we could offer the word hope as a lovely candidate to fill its place.

According to Gabriel, Mary could have hope because for God, nothing is impossible. As we will see, it is a fearful thing to place our hope in such a God who holds out such possibility in front of us when the backdrop is so stark. Hoping means being vulnerable, and risks the possibility of being disappointed. It is much easier and to look at God and life through the disclaimer, especially this year.

And yet, the angel still speaks to Mary and to us. All of us have felt the twinge of disappointed hope. Today, I look forward to joining together and celebrating our God who is yet faithful and still offers hope that does not disappoint.  – In Christ, Lead Pastor Rev. Dr. Pete Moon
