TODAY’S SERMON

By now many of you are likely familiar with at least a bit of my story. I am married to an incredible woman, Lynn, and we have five wonderful children. They were all born very close to one another and as a result, for many years, we had at least four teenagers in our house at the same time. It is easy to despair of those teenage raising challenges but Lynn and I found them to be, despite some bumps, some of the very best years in our household. While we endured many pillaged pantries and refrigerators, multitudes of school fees, and car gas gauges that never seemed to rise above the “E” after they drove, we loved the laughter, the energy, and the endless weekends of full houses of friends.

We also noted something interesting. It could be frustrating trying to talk with our teens. One word responses seemed the norm. But…there were these unique moments; rare occasions when the universe moved and they wanted to talk and talk a lot. We realized that we needed to overcome our shock, stop what we were doing, put our schedule aside a bit, and listen because that moment just didn’t happen often.

That is a long way around of saying that sometimes we have to recognize the importance of the moment and of the message so that we will deliberately engage and listen. It is true with life and kids, but it is also true with God. This week’s message will remind us that faith comes by hearing. That means that preaching matters, but it also means that our caliber of listening is just as, if not more, important. Listening is hard and it is getting harder every day. Join us for worship and let’s try to take on this contemporary challenge together. – Lead Pastor Pete Moon
