TODAY’S SERMON

On Thursday my sleepy eyes opened to hard things. A category four hurricane is barreling through Louisiana. Racial unrest has once again erupted in our nation with the shooting of Jacob Blake. A political convention gathers and reminds us of our national division in politics and faith. Then of course, there is always COVID. As the news went from the swirling bands of dark red over the Gulf Coast, to images of a 17-year-old firing his weapon in Wisconsin, I could only say “Lord have mercy.” Sometimes that is all we can say. Sometimes it is all we need to say.

It is times like this I especially miss our being together. How I would yearn to pray together and literally join hands with a community of faith as we seek mercy and hope for the Gulf Coast, for the nation, and for our enduring battles with this disease. I do, however, find solace and hope for us and in the words of Psalm 27: “The Lord is my light and my salvation – whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life – of whom shall I be afraid? I remain confident of this: I will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord.”

As you know, because we film our services early in the week, we are not able to respond in worship to national events in the timely way that we would desire. But please do join me today and in the days to come in praying for those who hurt in the aftermath of these literal hurricanes and the storms of racism, injustice, and violence. Also, let us continue to pray that we, as individuals and as a nation, might hear what the Lord wants us to hear and see what the Lord wants us to see. Let us also pray that we might respond to these needs and hurts around us in the way of Jesus. Lord have mercy… – In Christ, Lead Pastor Pete Moon
