The Audacity of Christian Art: Getting Closer to God through Art
- Class Leader: Amy Williams is a member of Reveille and a partner at Hunton, where she practices business law. She has participated in many Bible studies and was drawn to lead one that explores Scripture through the lens of Christian art. This summer, she traveled to the National Gallery in London to view several of the paintings featured in the class. Amy and her husband enjoy traveling and discovering beauty in art, faith, and culture.

- Description: This class will seek a greater understanding of God and Jesus Christ through scripture reading and a study of the ways in which artists depict Christian themes. We will study Christ as both human and divine, signs and symbols, God’s omnipresence, and Christ’s existence throughout time, in both heaven and on earth, as well as visions of God and how to describe God when words fail. Class sessions will include a video series from The National Gallery in London. The class will also tour the VMFA on a date (TBD) this fall.
- Materials Needed: Bible
The “Red Letters” in the Bible
- Class Leader: Gary Mears is a retired Presbyterian Pastor (PC-USA) who recently joined Reveille. Gary felt a call to the ministry after a 25+ year career as a business executive in the Washington, DC area. He attended Wesley Theological Seminary and has served both as a new church planter and as the pastor of an existing church. He loves to study and talk about God’s messages for us, as revealed through Biblical text.
- Room Location: Church Parlor
- Class Duration/Time: October 8-November 19, Wednesdays, 5:30-7:00 pm, in-person
- Description: All Biblical text is sacred and we should not “cherry-pick.” That is, we should not pick and choose the text we like and want to follow and ignore the text we do not like. Having said that, Biblical text can be difficult and can appear, at times, contradictory. In this class, we will take a look at scripture that quotes Jesus’ words as a means of interpreting the overall messages of the Bible.
- Materials Needed: Bible or Bible phone app
