Poverty Study Outcomes

Reveille UMC
October 2015

It is hard to believe it has been almost a year since our joint church-wide study on poverty. For six Wonderful Wednesdays we were joined by members of Koinonia Christian Church and Love Center of Unity to break bread together, visit, and discuss the book When Helping Hurts.

As a follow up, a small task force was formed comprised of two members representing each church. Our goal was to maintain and strengthen the relationships we had made with our friends in Swansboro and to identify our assets and common goals. In our discussions about the Koinonia and LCU food pantries we realized that no fresh fruit or vegetables were available to distribute to the clients each month.

We are happy to report that we have been able to arrange a regular, monthly delivery to both food
pantries with the cooperation of Shalom Farms, a United Methodist ministry based in Goochland that supplies vegetables and fruit to food banks and food deserts in the city.

In August, for the first time ever, Koinonia and LCU were able to offer a choice of truly fresh produce to their recipients. God is good, all the time!
